Kemmerer

The small town of Kemmerer is a well-known coal mining community located on the west side of the state in Lincoln County.

It is also known as the birthplace of the JC Penney department store. While traveling through the area you can expect to find a few ghost towns and Fossil Butte National Monument. Here you will find the largest collection of fish fossils in the world; during the summer months you can even watch paleontologists collect fossils from the monument’s dig site. Kemmerer is home to two great annual events: FossilFest and the Oyster Ridge Music Festival. The music festival, held every July, has featured Grammy Award winning acts including the Peasall Sisters and Teri Hendricks.
