Flaming Gorge - Green River Basin Scenic Byway

Green River | Salt to Stone

Byway Basics
Your trip through Flaming Gorge – Green River Scenic Byway begins just west of Rock Springs. Head south on U.S. Highway 191 deep into redrock country and the Green River-Colorado drainage basin. Spanning the Wyoming/Utah border, this route winds through the high desert, astonishing rock formations, and glistening mountain peaks. Expect a minimum drive time of three hours on this 100 mile byway.

Flaming Gorge Country
The Flaming Gorge – Green River Basin Scenic Byway vicinity has long been popular for exploration. The area attracted the likes of John Wesley Powell, who in the 1860s took an expedition down the Green River, the last unexplored river in North America.
The river no longer runs free, since a dam at Red Canyon in Utah was completed in 1964. The resulting Flaming Gorge Reservoir is a centerpiece of area recreation, offering world-class trophy fishing and boating. The reservoir itself is a part of the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, a 91-mile long playground for adventurers and campers. Visitors can enjoy developed campgrounds and marinas or explore the backcountry and bays of this spectacular high desert oasis.

Wild Horses of the Red Desert
The Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop Tour runs roughly 23 miles along good, gravel-base roads. Travel this route and you may meet wild roans, blacks, paints, appaloosas and sorrels, all amidst panoramic views of the Wyoming Range to the west, the Wind River Range to the northeast and the Uinta Range to the south.
To begin the loop from Rock Springs, take exit 104 off Interstate 80 to U.S. 191 and continue north 13 miles to County Road 14. Turn left and head 2.5 miles to County Road 53, also on your left. From Green River, exit Interstate 80 at Flaming Gorge Way, turn left onto Trona Drive at the next intersection and follow it north as it turns into a dirt road and passes beneath the interstate.
