Wyoming is often known for Yellowstone and Grand Teton, but southern Wyoming is packed with hidden gems that are closer and quieter — perfect for a Denver to Wyoming road trip. You’ll explore Cheyenne, Laramie and Saratoga, three towns rich in Western heritage, expansive landscapes and vibrant restaurants.

Day 1: Cheyenne – Wyoming’s Capital

Drive Time: 90 minutes (via I-25 from Denver)

Start your weekend trip off right by hitting the road early to avoid any traffic on I-25. As you pass onto the Wyoming border, be sure to stop at Terry Bison Ranch and take a narrated bison train tour to see Wyoming’s state mammal up close. The hand-built trains take visitors (safely) on an hour-long ride to see its bison herd.

Have you ever imagined exploring a site that once controlled nuclear missiles? Just north of Cheyenne lies the Quebec 01 Missile Alert Facility, a Cold War relic that offers a unique glimpse into military history. Constructed in 1962 as a Minuteman I Launch Control site, it was later upgraded to house the Peacekeeper missile system in 1986. The facility remained operational until 2005 and was opened to the public as a state historic site. Visitors can embark on self-guided tours to explore the control rooms, complete with original equipment, and view various artifacts that highlight the site's pivotal role during the Cold War.

In contrast to military history, make your way back to Cheyenne to take a relaxing stroll through Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. Serving as a community cornerstone, the botanic gardens sites on nine acres and include the Shane Smith Grand Conservatory - a tropical paradise with a 34-foot-tall palm tree and the Paul Smith Children's Village where littles can interact and learn from sustainable landscapes.
