Powell is in #ParkCountyWY which also includes a large part of Yellowstone National Park. Park County is surrounded by mountains on all sides. we are lucky to have 360 degrees of epic recreation for all kinds of outdoors enthusiasts. Mountain trails hold adventure for hikers, bikers, horsemen, and cross-country skiers. Mountain rivers and lakes provide blue ribbon fishing and a playground for paddling, kayaking, canoeing, and yes, sailing. Hunters pose with wild game. Downhill skiers enjoy the powder. The vast amount of public lands and breathtaking scenery in the region attract a wide variety of artisans: artists, photographers, crafters, potters, and blacksmiths. Four seasons of endless adventure await!

The air is just better out here. Wyoming has some the nations cleanest air quality.We welcome you to enjoy our crisp clean air. Nestled right next to our first national park, Yellowstone National Park, remember you are at elevation. Powell is at 4,393 feet above sea level and we are in the high desert so drink lots of water and stop often to enjoy our mountain views.
A Memorable Journey
Journeys can be planned, or happened upon. Here in the northwest corner of Wyoming it is best to get a map because cell service can be sporadic, especially in Yellowstone, depending on your carrier. The Powell Visitor Center is happy to supply you with free state maps and also lots of Wyoming recreation maps. Keep your cameras close because we have many opportunities to pull over and take a selfie.
Powell is a quick scenic drive from Cody, WY. Get in your car, roll down the windows and drive east on ALT 14 24 miles (approx. 30 minutes or less).
Powell is a quick scenic drive west from Lovell, WY 22 miles and (approx. 28 minutes or less).
Powell is a quick and wonderfully scenic drive from Red Lodge, MT. Get in your car and dive south 55 miles (approx. 1 hour).
Powell is a scenic drive from Thermopolis, WY 105 miles (approx. 1 hour and 45 minutes)
Here for the History?
Powell Wyoming was a part of the Shoshone Project, a federal Reclamation Project in 1904 to bring irrigation to the region and expand productive farmland westward. In 1910 our town was incorporated and we have been an agricultural community ever since.
