Killpecker Sand Dunes

Rock Springs | Salt to Stone

Killpecker Sand Dunes from Wyoming Office of Tourism on Vimeo.

You can play in one of nature's largest sandboxes in the country just a few miles north of Rock Springs at the Killpecker Sand Dunes. The sprawling dunes seem out of place in southwest Wyoming — it's the kind of environment you'd expect to find in the deserts of Africa or the Middle East. There's an off-road vehicle "play area" for desert toys and lots of space to walk around in the sand. Boar's Tusk, the core of an ancient volcano, rises straight out of the ground and guards the sand dunes. Along with Devils Tower in Northeast Wyoming, it's one of only two such geological features in the state. Little known outside the Rock Springs area, the tusk and dunes are well worth the effort and time of any visitor who wants to get out and explore the path less traveled.
