Fremont County Postal History by Stan Grove

“Fremont County Postal History” June 1, 6-7:30pm
Join the Riverton Museum for their next Wyoming Community Bank Speaker Series event to learn about the Postal History of Fremont County on June 1st at 6pm.
Often overlooked by historians as well as the general public, artifacts carried by the mail can shed light on the ways and manners of a given time. “Postal History” is the study of where and how the everyday mail has been addressed, conveyed, and delivered. Even when the letters are no longer extant to provide a direct glimpse of earlier times, envelopes alone, with all of their markings, can evoke a story exploration and settlement, hard times and not so hard, urbane civilization and rugged frontier conditions.
In this presentation, Stan Grove presents a wide-ranging assortment of postal history items, with a focus on Fremont County, from the first 100 years of Wyoming’s participation in the Westward Expansion. He traces the evolution of postal service from Oregon Trail and Pony Express to the rapid multiplication of post offices in the early 1900s and their eventual dwindling to the eleven we have today.
This program is free and open to the public. Call the Riverton Museum for details, 1-307-856-2665.
